Mindfulness as a Vehicle for Improving Cognition Reducing Stress
Mindfulness as a Vehicle for Improving Cognition Reducing Stress Improving Academic Performance Thereâs been a lot of talk recently (in certain psychology or educational circles, at least) on the topic of mindfulness practice and its various benefits. What was once a feature of eastern philosophy/religion has grown into an increasingly Western and somewhat mainstream activity. Two of the most potentially powerful benefits of mindfulness practice include cognitive enhancement and stress-reduction. As a result, mindfulness has started to be implemented in school systems and curricula worldwide. But what is the practice of mindfulness, just how effective is it, and how can we reap the benefits by incorporating mindfulness into our lives? . âMindfulness can be defined as the psychological capacity to stay willfully present with one's experiences, with a non-judgmental or accepting attitude, engendering a warm and friendly openness and curiosityâ (Kabat-Zinn, 2005). This article explores the science behind mindfulness practice and its effects on academic performance and stress reduction along with a few helpful tips to incorporate mindfulness practice into your daily living. The general notion behind mindfulness involves present awareness. That is to say, being as fully aware of the present moment as possible. Another pillar of the practice is to be ânon-judgmentalâ in the assessment of the current situation. The roots of such an exercise date back to over 2,500 years ago in Buddhist tradition (as well as the tradition of various other Eastern modalities). By bringing ones awareness to the present moment, one ceases to invest their energy into the past and the future, both of which are simply creations of oneâs mind to begin with. While deliberation of future choices and pontification of prior events are necessary from time to time, it is no surprise to hear that all too many of us spend too much time and energy âinside our headsâ in one of these two places. As a result, we relinquish our ability to savor and utilize the only moment that truly exists: the present. But how can this concept benefit the striving student achieve success? Well for o ne, it increases attention span. These techniques help steady the mind and train its attentional capacity, while also increasing its breadth of focus (Zenner,C et al., 2014). Increasing attention span and the ability to focus on complex information sounds like a poweful benefit for a student. Hereâs a simple exercise one can utilize to develop a state of mindfulness and garner these benefits: Technique: The âAnchorâ The first technique we are going to discuss is âthe anchorâ. Much like the anchor used by a boat or a ship to keep it in place among the current and the waves, we must utilize a simple anchor to hold our awareness in place in the present moment. A common method utilized is to make your breath the anchor. Why our breath? Because itâs something we constantly do, all the time, as long as we live. Bringing awareness into the present moment is simply achieved by âfeelingâ your senses and sensations all throughout your body. By mindfully feeling my fingers hit the keys on my keyboard, my body pressed against the couch, my puppyâs fur pressed up against me while she sleeps, I draw my attention out of my mind and into the present moment. Thus, in this anchoring to our breath method, we simply become hyper aware of our breath. Really feel the air enter your nostrils or mouth, feel the temperature of the air, feel its sensations as it fills up your lungs with oxygen, vitality and l ife. As you breath out, repeat the process and really bring awareness to how the breath feels. By attempting to do this for every breath, you will notice your conscious mind being more involved with your surroundings and the present state of matters instead of living in the past of the future. Expanding on the âAnchorâ technique: Several other variations of this technique may be utilized to develop mindfulness. All these variations have the same common element of bringing ones attention to their five senses. This sensory hyperawareness is what is key to establishing awareness of what is going on around you instead of what is going on in your head. Eating: Mindfulness can be utilized whilst eating by truly savoring the texture, taste and other properties of the food. In modern society, eating is often paired with conversation, television, and other social or entertainment activities. However, in some eastern cultures, such as China, it is encouraged to simply focus on eating and digestion when consuming a meal. The idea is that the extra energy spent doing something in addition to eating, can be focused into actually eating, digesting and enjoying the meal. Thus, engaging our senses during eating can help invoke a stronger sense of mindfulness among the practitioner. Other techniques to build mindfulness: Yoga Meditation Body Scan exercises (a gradual sweeping of attention through the body (Zenner,C et al., 2014). It is recommended the practitioner engages in about 45 minutes of home practice in mindfulness a day to maximize the benefits gained (Zenner,C et al., 2014). Mindfulness in the Treatment of Anxiety Stress The reduction of evaluation anxiety and stress among students, particularly in higher education is potentially one of the most significant, academic benefits to mindfulness practice. A study evaluating 70 higher education students earning either their bachelorâs or masterâs revealed reduction in both cognitive and emotional components of anxiety (Dundas,I. et al., 2016). Mindfulness in the Treatment of Mental Illness Disease States While current psychology attempts to treat diseased states of mind, Buddhist practices like mindfulness were used to cultivate positive mind states and promote mental well-being (Wallace,B.A. 2006). Today, the applications and the benefits of Mindfulness based practices have extended both into the clinic and the classroom. Indeed, the two also come together when discussing the benefit of mindfulness for children with learning disorders (e.g. ADHD) and social anxiety disorders. With almost a fifth of children between the ages of thirteen to eighteen experiencing some sort of severe mental illnesses, it is clear that some sort of impactful and therapeutic intervention is necessary (Zenner, C et al., 2014). To date, the advancements made in the cognitive and psychological fields around mindfulness have far outpaced their introduction in individual's lives and in Western society and school systems, so we can expect to see such practices expanding farther and becoming much more common place in our education system. The data reveals the positive influences of such therapies among a variety of students in a variety of situations. The benefits extend into the clinical realm by treating various disease states. In conclusion, mindfulness based practice is considered by many to be one of the newest and most revolutionary psyhchological tools in recent memory (even though the practice is almost 3,000 years old...) We are in an age where we are learning how to unlock the full potential of our minds and new advancements are emerging from ancient traditions and practices. Whether it's meditation, yoga or anchoring yourself in your breath, try incorporating a mindfulness practice into your life today and observe the benefits over time. Everything You Need to Know About Equal Pay Day
Everything You Need to Know About Equal Pay Day Image via: www.pexels.com Where did Equal Pay Day come from? The fight for equal rights between men and women has been a long and exhausting battle, dating all the way back to the 1800s. In 1848, the first Womenâs Rights Convention took place. Hundreds of activists gathered together at this convention to fight for a womanâs right to education and employment, as well as the right to vote. Years later, the first organized labor advocacy group worked toward fighting for equal pay between men and women. Later, the Womenâs Trade Union League was created to help improve wages and working conditions for women in the workforce. Almost a decade later, The Equal Pay Act was put into action requiring employers to pay men and women the same wages for doing the same work. After advocacy groups and legislations continued to fight for the equal rights between men and women, a silver lining reared its head in 2015, when the Paycheck Fairness Act was written. This comprehensive bill boosts the Equal Pay Act of 1963, but the battle still is not over! This is why Equal Pay Day exists! How can you celebrate Equal Pay Day? There are many ways to be an active celebrator of Equal Pay Day. First, you can contact your elected officials of your state and urge them to take action by passing the Paycheck Fairness Act. Be sure to spread the word among your friends and family and encourage them to do the same thing. Second, host an âunequalâ sale of some sort, selling food or objects with a special price: 21 percent off for women and full price for men. Doing this will establish a dialogue between men and women, showing both sides why the pay gap is unfair. Lastly, do what every angry American does to spread the word about their problems and concerns: take it to the Internet! Ask journalistic publications to write about Equal Pay Day and its importance to society. The more coverage the day gets, the better. Image via: www.pixabay.com Why should you be a part of Equal Pay Day? If you are an advocate for equal rights among the sexes, this is a perfect way to show your support. Grab your friends and your anti-establishment rage and get started! Who can be a part of Equal Pay Day? While it does seem like a battle for women, anyone, and I do mean anyone, can join the battle for equal pay between men and women despite your gender. With 20 cents to make up for, we need as many people up for the battle as possible.
Whats in Your Nanny Bag 10 Items Nannies Should Bring With Them to the Job
What's in Your Nanny Bag 10 Items Nannies Should Bring With Them to the Job Image via Pixabay.com 1. Contact list First and foremost, you should have a list of phone numbers given to you by the parents or guardians. This list should contain phone numbers for them, the childrenâs physicians, any nearby relatives, and neighbors that you might need to reach out to in case of an emergency. Have this list with you at all times during the job so that you will be prepared if anything was to happen. 2. Books This is for you and the children. Bring you a copy of a book to read while the kids are down for a nap, and have something nice to read to them before bed or before that nap. 3. Snacks and drinks Those kids are going to start running low on energy at some point during the day. If youâre out and about, itâs nice to bring along some fun snacks to keep the kids feeling energetic and playful. A few water bottles or some juice pouches will help them stay hydrated, too. Consider yogurt, apples, pretzels, and packaged crackers for snacks. You can also check out this list of fun snacks you can prepare ahead of the job and bring along with you in your bag that will have the children thinking youâre the coolest nanny around. Image via Pixabay.com 4. Games Looking at an evening indoors? You should consider packing a few games into your nanny bag. They can be store-bought board games such as Operation or Candyland, or card games like Go Fish and Old Maid, or you could do a combination of either type of game. Keep in mind what the childrenâs ages are when deciding which games to bring along. You can also get creative and make your own games for the children to play just by using a few common tools. Another thing to think about is the childrenâs interests. If you know theyâre all big fans of DC superheroes, you can research and write up some trivia questions based on the DC universe and then reward the winners with some fun DC-themed prizes! 5. Rules and important information from parents or guardians Before you arrive for any job, you should meet up with the parents and go over any rules they might have in place for the children. If they have a strict rule about not watching TV after seven oâ clock in the evening, take a note so that you wonât forget or be âmisinformedâ by children eager to stay up late and watch TV. A list of any food or other types of allergies, prescribed medications, and dosages is another important item to get from parents before your stay with the children starts. Read over it and have it memorized so that youâll be more than ready to snap into action if something were to happen. 6. Extra set of childrens clothes Sometimes, there are accidents. If Billy spills sticky grape juice on the front of his shirt while on the way to the park, youâll be happy to have something easy for him to swap into. Instead of speeding back to the house, you will have the clothes right there with you in the bag that Billy will be able to change into. So, you wonât have to postpone the trip and thereâs more daylight for Billy to play and have fun! 7. Extra clothes for you Packing an extra set of clothes for yourself could save you the trouble of having to drive all the way back to your home to get an extra shirt. New 2 year degrees will save time and money - Tutor Hunt Blog
New 2 year degrees will save time and money New 2 year degrees will save time and money, but will they be popular? New 2 year degrees will save time and money, but will they be popular?UniversitiesA series of new government proposals could allow degrees to be completed in only 2 years. Any universities offering these accelerated degree courses will probably charge a higher yearly fee, but it looks like the proposals will stipulate that the overall cost must be lower than the full 3 year degree. The universities minister Sam Gyimah announced these new fast track qualifications in a statement earlier this week, saying that an expected annual fee will be around 11,000. Tuition fees in the double figures may seem excessive, but students` will actually be saving around 5,750 given the shorter duration of their courses. There may also be an added reduction in accommodation costs, along with the benefit of students being able to enter the workplace early. Mr Gyimah was adamant that the new scheme would be appealing to many students, both because of the lower overall cost, and the possibility of entering their chosen profession a year earlier. `Accelerated degrees not only make it possible for the next generation of students to access higher education and the undeniable financial, academic and personal benefits it has to offer but drives the sector to offer dynamic choices that serve students` needs.` The shorter courses would actually contain the same number of teaching hours as their three year counterparts, but the lectures will be squeezed into two 45 week years. While this will be fine for some students, others may find the intense, relentless schedule difficult. They will have grown used to having substantial breaks around Christmas and Easter, and of course an even longer break during the summer; studying for such extended periods, with only short respites, may be challenging. The plans still require government approval before they can be put in place, with one of the obstacles being the higher fees, which are currently capped at 9,250. If they are given approval Mr Gyimah has said the new accelerated courses could be in place as early as next year. The option of 2 year degrees have been proposed in the past, with an earlier consultation suggesting that within the next 10 years 5 percent of all students could be on the shorter degree courses. These 2 year courses schemes certainly sound very modern, but in fact there are a few universities who have been offering them for over 40 years. The University of Buckingham is well known for providing these accelerated schemes - their website homepage proudly displays the message `Home of the two year Degree.` The University claims that students are extremely enthusiastic about saving a year of living costs, and entering the workplace a year earlier; and having run these courses for more than four decades there`s certainly enough evidence of them being popular. The vice-chancellor of the University of Buckingham, Sir Anthony Seldon (well known historian and biographer) expounded upon the benefits of the two year degree:`Two-year degrees are a more efficient and cost-effective method for students to get on with their careers and their lives.` He expressed a cautionary note however, saying that the shorter courses may not suit all universities: `Universities offering three-year degrees will find it difficult to restructure. We would like the universities minister to engage in discussions with us in order to assist independent providers who offer two-year degrees.` Other concerns were voiced by The University and College Union, an organisation that represents teachers and researchers. They said the 2 year course poses `an educational risk` and that `fast track programmes will make it harder for students to combine study with periods of reflection, critical thinking and a `deep approach` to learning`. The union also said that many students would find the increased workload difficult to cope with, that it might prevent then earning money while studying, and other responsibilities, such as caring for a relative or a child, might become strained. 15 months ago0Add a Comment

It is a good practice to know the different types of chemicals that you will extract from organic compounds before you start.ETC stands for Extracting, Toning and Curing. In organic chemistry, the term ETC refers to two chemical processes. One process is that of the extraction of the chemicals from the organic compound and the other process is that of taming and curing the organic compound. Both of these processes are essential in organic chemistry as they help in refining and purifying the finished product. You need to understand the difference between the two processes and how they work. If you look at the scientific method, you will see that you can not mix two things together without knowing the difference between them. If you mix powdered salt with water, you cannot get rid of the salt, if you mix table salt with water, you would get rid of the salt, if you mix sugar with water, you would not be able to taste the sugar. Therefore, you need to know the difference between the two processes in organic chemistry.ETC stands for Extracting, Toning and Curing, which is a chemical term in organic chemistry. This is a process in which you will remove some chemicals from an organic compound. This process will remove the chemicals in such a way that they will be removed from the chemical as well. For example, you can remove hydrogen and oxygen in an alcohol by using an alcohol tester which will remove the alcohol from the carbon dioxide that is present in the air.Once you know about ETC, you will also know about other chemical processes that are essential in organic chemistry. This is important because you need to know about these two processes. For example, you can use the alcohol tester to remove the sulphur from water.
